Position Summary

The Assistant Loco Pilot position is a technical role responsible for assisting the Loco Pilot in train operations, maintenance, and safety protocols. This entry-level position serves as a stepping stone for career advancement in Indian Railways’ locomotive department.

To assist in safe train operations, locomotive maintenance, and ensure adherence to railway safety standards while supporting senior locomotive pilots in daily operational activities.

Educational Qualification

Experience Requirements

Salary and Benefits

Pay Level and Pay Matrix

Level 2 in 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix with regular increment opportunities and promotional prospects to higher levels.

Basic Pay Range

  • Starting Salary: ₹19,900 per month
  • Maximum Basic Pay: ₹63,200 per month at Level 2
  • Annual Increment: 3% of basic pay

Job Responsibilities

Core Functional Duties

  • Assist Loco Pilot in train operation and safety procedures
  • Monitor locomotive instruments and systems during journey
  • Perform pre and post trip locomotive inspections

  • Handle emergency situations under supervision

  • Round-the-clock duty roster including nights and holidays
  • Travel across different routes and stations

Reporting Structure

Reports to Senior Loco Pilot, Loco Foreman, and divisional transportation officials. Works closely with station masters, guards, and other operational staff.

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT) Stage I

Written Examination Details

CBT Stage I:

  • 75 questions for 60 minutes
  • Sections: Mathematics, General Intelligence, General Science, General Awareness

CBT Stage II:
